Overview
Iron deficiency anemia is a condition that occurs when the body doesn't have enough iron, resulting in fewer red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.
Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Cold hands and feet
- Headache
- Craving for ice or clay
- Sore or smooth tongue
- Brittle nails or hair loss
Treatment
- Iron supplements: Can be taken orally to increase iron levels in the blood.
- Iron-rich diet: Eat foods like meats, poultry, fish, leafy greens, legumes, and whole-wheat breads.
- IV iron: May be needed if there's malabsorption or intolerance.

Iron supplements can cause stomach irritation and discoloration of bowel movements.
